Vehicles spend the most fuel when accelerating from stop to start. In hybrid vehicles the electric motor is used to supplement or help the combustion engine to propel the car. The reduced load on the engine reduced fuel consumption & significantly reduced emissions. In addition to start-stop maneuvers, the electric motor will also assist when the vehicle is accelerating.
When the vehicle is decelerating, the electric controller switches the electric motor into an electric generator. Doing so, enables us to capture part of the energy that would have otherwise been lost in the form of heat. The batteries store this energy and supply it to the motors when they need to assist the engine. Traditionally there are 2 configurations for a hybrid vehicle. There is the series hybrid and the parallel hybrid configurations. |

The concept of powering a vehicle by more than one source of power forms the crux of hybrid technology. An electric motor is introduced in the vehicle to supplement the traditional combustion engine. A battery pack and an electronic controller complete the system. The electric motor can be attached to the vehicle in many configurations. The main point is that the motor is coupled to the drive shaft and is rotating at the same (or a fraction of) speed. |
